8 WAYS TO BE A SMARTER TEACHER
1. It's not about you - it's about them! - share what you know
but remember that the students, not YOU, should be the focus.
2. Study your students - observe observe observe! plan then based
on what they are needing from you!
3. Students take risks when teachers create a safe environment
- create cozy spots, add pillows, even a couch - creating comfortable
places and relaxing, calm environments encourages learning.
4. Good teachers exude passion as well as purpose - desire is
infectious! Do you have passion for your material? your age-group?
your job?
5. Teach from the heart - the best teaching becomes personal..
teaching requires the courage to explore your own sense of identity....
by knowing yourself you can fully know your students.
6. Teaching is not the passing out of information - avoid the
"Mug Jug Theory" - teaching as though you have the jug
and the kids hold the mug... teaching is not the filling of a
bucket, it is a lighting of a fire.
7. Stop talking and start listening - Alfie Kohn, author, teacher,
researcher out of Boston recently said, "Terrific teachers
have teeth marks on their tongues". It takes courage to begin
learning the importance of knowing when to just simply shut up.
8. Avoid using the same approach for everyone - there is no one
size fits all formula! We want one because that would make it
easy - but good teaching is not easy... if it was, everyone would
be doing it.
