November Notes
so as I learn more about computers and websites I am wondering really what the difference is between our WHAT'S NEW page and this here JOURNAL page.... maybe I will add it to my list of things to think about during our "break"!
I told you on the front page about the PLAY workshop I went to last weekend at the Rochester AEYC Conference. It was a good session. I have been thinking about what made it so good. It was small, and we were given time to think and go deeper than usual, plus it was a 90 minute session and in a conference setting - where most sessions are 60 minutes - that is rare. It is amazing what an extra 30 minutes can provide when the environment is right. I will say that "the environment being right" is a huge part of the success of those extra minutes, because you know as well as I do that there are times when even 60 minutes can be toooo looongg! But I digress....
We talked about our own experiences of play. We were in small groups. Things we thought about and talked about: As adults what do we remember about playing as kids? Who assisted our play? Who (or what) got in the way? As adults what do we do NOW that is play? My favorite ah-ha was talking about the difference between playing and being playful... this led to a neat observation that if I am being encouraged to "play", might it be just another thing on my to-do list, whereas if I approach my day "playfully" maybe play emerges spontaneously because I see things a little differently... I approach the day with playful eyes... not with pressure to have to "play today."
I told the facilitators that I had been toying with a new keynote/workshop for some time now about (question) how are we able to defend soemthing in the lives of children,(play) that we don't even make time for ourselves??? I shared how I have been hitting a block as to what the message was and how to deliver it. I thanked them for assisting me through that block and helping me find another part of my voice in that 90 minutes. That in-depth discussion and sharing session helped me find the format of this workshop that has been wanting to come out - - I needed some helping hands. I got it last Saturday.
A nod of thanks to them.
