Hold on to your socks...
I know that things are getting crazy out there in the ECE and preschool world - but I think I have just heard the one that takes the proverbial cake. I was recently doing a workshop with a group that said they are following some, whatever, XYZ Curriculum Program. (I don't remember the real name of what they are using - that isn't the point though) and they told me that if they read a book to the kids that is not in the XYZ Curriculum they have to show that this book IS aligned with their State's Standards, and if it is 1. not in the XYZ Curriculum, and 2. not aligned with any standards THEY CAN'T READ IT TO THE KIDS!!!!
That is a bunch of nonsense. Who puts up with that? WHY? This kind of stuff really makes me wonder why anyone right now would want to do what we do. Who would CHOOSE to enter a profession where you are treated like you do not know what you are doing, even if you have an advanced degree.
It also makes me wonder (uh - oh - going deeper) why folks continue to put up with it. I asked this director, "Who told you this?" She told me. I asked, "WHO told them?" I told her if I was her employee these are the things that I would be asking her.
I clarified with her, "So if I read a book to the class that didn't fit this criteria and someone walked in on me, I could, what? get written up? loose my job?" She gave me a look that I intrepreted as "YES."
I told her, "Fine. Fire me. Then watch me call Oprah, CBS and Newsweek and tell them that I was fired from my teaching job for reading to children."
oooooooooooh this fires me up! watch out! We have started talking about this stuff at workshops, we can't afford NOT to. It's time to stand up and be heard folks.
I'll see you soon!
Be ready!
